Why Volunteering With Your Kids Matters

(And Where to Do It in Columbia!)

Between sports practices, homework, snack requests, and trying to keep up with everyday life, it can feel hard to squeeze in “extra” things as a family. But volunteering together is one of those activities that really sticks with kids, and honestly, it doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming to make a big impact.

Helping others teaches kids empathy, responsibility, gratitude, and confidence. It also gives families a chance to slow down a little and connect in a meaningful way. Even younger children can participate in simple acts of kindness, and older kids often love feeling like they’re making a real difference.

The best part? Columbia has SO many amazing organizations that welcome families and volunteers of all ages.

Here are a few local places where your family can get involved:

Animal Rescues & Shelters

Animal-loving kiddos? Columbia has several organizations that often need help with donation drives, supply collections, socializing animals, fostering, or event support.

  • Columbia Second Chance
  • Central Missouri Humane Society
  • Unchained Melodies Dog Rescue

Younger children can help collect pet food, towels, blankets, or toys, while older kids may be able to assist at events or help make enrichment items for animals. Families can help care for the animals, socialize, and assisst with adoption events.

Food Banks & Meal Programs

Teaching kids about helping neighbors in need can be incredibly impactful.

  • The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri
  • Loaves & Fishes

Many organizations have family-friendly volunteer opportunities like packing food boxes, organizing donations, or participating in food drives. Always check age requirements ahead of time.

Community Cleanups & Outdoor Projects

If your family enjoys being outside, this is a great option.

  • Missouri River Relief
  • City of Columbia Parks and Recreation

Park cleanups and river cleanups are a surprisingly fun way to volunteer together, especially for active kids who don’t love sitting still. Check out the organization's individual calendars for clean up days.

Helping Other Families

Sometimes volunteering is as simple as helping another local family.

  • Donate gently used clothes and toys
  • Assemble hygiene kits
  • Make cards for nursing home residents
  • Participate in school supply drives

Organizations like Voluntary Action Center often have opportunities that families can participate in together.

Tips for Volunteering With Kids

  • Start small. Even one hour counts.
  • Pick something your child already enjoys.
  • Don’t stress about perfection.
  • Talk afterward about how it felt to help.
  • Make it fun, not a chore.

One of the coolest things about volunteering with kids is that they often remember these experiences far more than we expect. Whether it’s walking shelter dogs, packing food boxes, or picking up trash at a park, those little moments help shape compassionate, community-minded humans.

And honestly? The grown-ups usually leave feeling pretty good too.
