Family Resources Every Mid-Missouri Parent Should Know About
Parenting is amazing... and sometimes really hard.
Whether you're looking for free activities to keep little ones busy, need support during a difficult season, or simply want to know what's available in our community, Mid-Missouri has some incredible resources for families. Best of all, many of them are completely free or very low cost.
Here are a few organizations and programs every parent should know about.
🧸 Play, Learn & Connect at First Chance for Children
One of Columbia's best-kept secrets is First Chance for Children. Their Lend & Learn Toy Library is a free indoor play space designed for children ages 0 to 5 where families can explore hundreds of educational toys, meet other parents, and even check toys out to enjoy at home. (and listed in our Indoor Play Places Guide! ) The Columbia location also features an outdoor playground. The organization also offers diaper assistance, parenting education, developmental screenings, safe sleep resources, and other programs that help families thrive.
Perfect for:
- Rainy day play
- Socializing toddlers and preschoolers
- Meeting other caregivers
- Borrowing toys instead of buying them
📚 Explore the Boone County Public Library
The library is so much more than books.
Families can enjoy free storytimes, crafts, STEM activities, homeschool programs, teen events, and workshops throughout the year. Children can also participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, sign up for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library (for eligible children), check out educational activity kits, and access online learning resources.
Many of their events are listed on our calendar- check it out for all things kid/parenting related!
👶 Parents Need Support Too
If you're expecting a baby or raising young children, First Chance for Children offers several programs beyond playgroups, including:
- Baby Bags
- Safe C.R.I.B.S. (safe sleep education and crib assistance)
- Baby U parenting education
- Developmental screenings
- Connections to additional community services
Remember: Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness. These programs exist because every family needs support sometimes.
❤️ Developmental & Family Support
If you have concerns about your child's development, behavior, or learning, there are local organizations ready to help.
Resources include:
- Missouri First Steps (birth to age 3)
- Parents as Teachers
- FACE of Boone County for behavioral and emotional screenings
- Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment
- Boone County Family Resources for eligible individuals with developmental disabilities.
Early support can make a big difference, and many screenings are free.
🏡 Need Extra Help?
Families experiencing financial hardship may also find assistance through organizations like:
- Central Missouri Community Action for utility assistance, housing support, and other basic needs.
- ParentLink for parenting resources and referrals.
- Local WIC offices and the Columbia/Boone County Public Health Department for nutrition and maternal health programs.
